Why UL Certification Matters

In the United States, operating non-certified industrial equipment exposes your business to serious liability — insurance claims, OSHA violations, production shutdowns, and facility-wide safety risks. UL certification is not optional; it's the baseline for legal, insurable operation.

For companies importing equipment from China, the challenge is compounded. Chinese-manufactured machines are built to different standards and rarely arrive UL-listed. Without proper certification, that equipment cannot legally operate in a US facility.

HMW Services bridges this gap. Our team has deep expertise in both Chinese manufacturing standards and US compliance requirements — we know exactly what needs to change, what documentation is required, and how to get your equipment certified efficiently.

Risks of Non-Certified Equipment

  • Insurance claim denials after incidents
  • OSHA citations and facility shutdowns
  • Personal liability for injuries
  • Production downtime and lost revenue
  • Inability to pass facility safety audits

What We Certify

Two Certification Paths

Whether you have equipment already running or new machines arriving from China, we have a proven process for each scenario.

Path 01

Currently Running Machines

Equipment already in operation that was never properly certified, or machines that have been modified since original certification. We assess current state, identify gaps, and bring the equipment into full compliance.

Process Steps

  1. 1

    Equipment Assessment

Full inspection of electrical systems, controls, safety devices, and mechanical components

  2. 2

    Gap Analysis

Identify all deviations from NEC, NFPA 79, and applicable UL standards

  3. 3

    Remediation

Modify wiring, replace non-compliant components, install required safety devices

  4. 4

    Documentation

Prepare complete technical file: schematics, BOM, safety analysis

  5. 5

    Certification

Submit for UL field evaluation or third-party NRTL certification

Path 02

New Imports from China

Equipment purchased from Chinese manufacturers and being imported to the US for the first time. We manage the entire compliance process from pre-shipment review through final certification.

Process Steps

  1. 1

    Pre-Shipment Review

Review factory documentation, schematics, and component specs before equipment ships

  2. 2

    Customs & Delivery

Coordinate import documentation and on-site delivery

  3. 3

    Incoming Inspection

Verify equipment matches specifications and identify compliance gaps

  4. 4

    Compliance Modifications

Upgrade electrical systems, controls, and safety devices to US standards

  5. 5

    Certification & Commissioning

Obtain UL certification and commission equipment for production

Standards We Work With

Code Expertise

NFPA 79

Electrical Standard for Industrial Machinery

The primary US standard governing electrical equipment on industrial machines. We ensure full compliance with wiring methods, overcurrent protection, control circuits, and safety functions.

NEC

National Electrical Code (NFPA 70)

Governs electrical installations in facilities. Our installations meet all NEC requirements for industrial occupancies, including panel installations and field wiring.

UL 508A

Industrial Control Panels

The UL standard for industrial control panel construction. We design and build panels to UL 508A requirements, enabling listing by a recognized NRTL.

OSHA

Occupational Safety Standards

All certified equipment meets applicable OSHA machine guarding, lockout/tagout, and electrical safety requirements.

IEC 60204

Safety of Machinery — Electrical Equipment

For equipment with international origins, we reconcile IEC 60204 designs with US NFPA 79 requirements.

UL 698A

Industrial Control Panels for Hazardous Locations

For facilities with classified hazardous areas, we provide compliant panel design and certification.
